In this video I show you how to properly use your weapon light to give yourself the tactical advantage. There are a number of tactical considerations you need to have when using a weapon light.
Foot pursuits are one of the most dynamic situations officers will find themselves in. They are very fluid in nature and dangerous. There are some very easy and trainable do's and don'ts as it relates to when to use a weapon light. The bottom line is that you should be deliberate and when you activate the light you should do so with a purpose.
1. Don't point your weapon light at the objects immediately in front of you or the ground unless absolutely necessary. Doing so will cause you to silhouette yourself. Making yourself an easier target. This is improper use of your weapon light.
2. If you are at a barricade, which would likely be a wall of so
me sort, unsure you are back off from the barricade and that when you activate your light the throw portion is sent beyond the barricade.
Failure to execute this properly will cause you to hurt your night vision and make you an easier target by silhouetting yourself. By following these principles, you will be able to utilize your weapon light properly to its full potential. This will allow you to disorient, distract, and diminish a suspect's situational awareness.
Learning how to properly use your weapon light is a big deal. It can literally be the difference between life and death. Train HARD.
