Surround and Call Out

Delta Force and Army Rangers with the 75th Ranger Regiment landed outside and surrounded an isolated compound in Barisha, Syria. Through a bullhorn, they repeatedly ordered occupants to come out peacefully to minimize casualties. Individuals exited the compound including 11 children. Believing the main entrance was booby-trapped, operators breached the compound wall with explosives. Operators, along with military working dogs and robots, entered the compound. Five IS members inside the compound — four women and one man — "presented a threat to the force" and were killed when they did not respond to commands to surrender, as they were suspected of wearing suicide vests. The target, al-Baghdadi, fled into a tunnel with two children and detonated a suicide vest as a military working dog was sent in after him — killing himself and the two children. The dog survived.
